Game Overview

Call of Duty: Black Ops drops players behind enemy lines as members of an elite special forces unit, engaging in covert operations and explosive conflicts across the globe. With access to experimental weapons and classified technology, every mission pushes players deeper into one of the most volatile eras of modern history.

My Contributions

After graduating college, I rejoined Treyarch full-time to help bring Call of Duty: Black Ops to the Nintendo Wii. Alongside that, I collaborated with the PC team to build modding tools and create training content so players could design their own levels and share them online. My contributions included:

  • Designing and implementing user-generated content tools, server management systems, and pipelines that allowed players to create and publish custom mods and maps.
  • Developing training content and templates for the modding community, keeping resources updated with every major game release.

User-Generated Content Tools

Tasks: design, engineering, distribution, documentation

I helped build the Black Ops mod tools and made sure dedicated servers were simple to manage on the user side. Working closely with the Game Server Providers team, I designed the front-end experience for GSPs to integrate smoothly with our pipeline, making it easier for players to distribute and host their mods.

I also designed and programmed a new Mod SDK Launcher, learning from community feedback on the World at War SDK. Throughout development, I stayed engaged with the modding community, gathering feedback directly to ensure the tools were practical, accessible, and fun to use.

Wii Port

Tasks: design, gameplay scripting, motion controls

My role on the Wii version of Black Ops involved integrating ongoing changes from the mainline game, redesigning key level moments to meet performance and streaming budget requirements, and implementing responsive Wii motion controls.

The final product stayed true to its Xbox counterpart, capturing the cinematic feel that defines Call of Duty, while still running within the technical constraints of the Nintendo Wii.
